“In the future, it will no longer be all about oil and rust, but primarily about bits and bytes.”
The aim of the scoreboard is to help Member States in clarifying which areas need improvement and subsequently identify priorities for investment and new or improved policies. „The scoreboard serves as a road sign on this journey, pointing the way and indicating the distance still to be covered.“ said EU Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc, „It is particularly encouraging to see that the efforts of this Commission to bridge the investment gap in the transport sector are starting to bear fruit." For a shift towards a high quality, decarbonised, fully integrated and efficient transport system, the European Commission passed its European Strategy for low-emission mobility in July 2016.
The report compares the Member States‘ performance in 30 transport-related categories. Germany records high shares of renewable energy in transport fuel and is ahead of all other EU Member States as regards private investment in research and development in the transport sector.
There is progress across the EU towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly mobility. However, the number of road deaths is stagnating. While European roads remain by far the safest in the world, Member States need to intensify efforts in order to reach the 2020 target of halving the number of road deaths.
