Automated and driver-less cars in public transportation

Increasing urbanisation is pushing public transportation infrastructures to the limits of their capacity in cities worldwide. Additionally, increasingly important issues include maintaining an adequate supply of mobility services in rural regions and on the outskirts of large cities as well as minimising the transport sector’s negative impact on the environment.

Future mobility concepts should aim at facilitating seamless intermodal transport. Digitisation, automation, and interconnection in mobility are important drivers for new mobility strategies. In all these fields, fully automated or driver-less cars (high or full automation) could facilitate the establishment of demand-focused services by ensuring continuous availability. Increasing progress in automation technology, the market readiness of driving functions based on these technologies, and the increasing deployment of a capable infrastructure opens numerous new possibilities for application as well as creating legal and political challenges.

The VdTÜV (Association of Technical Inspection Agencies) welcomes these developments in automated driving and will assist in the regulatory development process. Efforts should be made to create and harmonise regulation and the legal prerequisites for these novel traffic systems, especially those interconnecting vehicles with the transport infrastructure.
